Holy Sites in Israel

Israel is brimming with many of the most renowned biblical points of interest to Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. The Galilee region in the north of Israel has an abundance of holy archaeological and UNESCO Christian sites. Nazareth is home to the magnificent Church of the Annunciation while further north around the Sea of Galilee one can find Capernaum – the ancient 2,000 year old “Town of Jesus”, The Mount of Beatitudes (where the Sermon on the Mount took place) and Tabgha (The feeding of the 5000).

Jerusalem in particular is home to holy sites revered by all three Abrahamic religions. A spiritual home since the 10th century BCE, Jerusalem is the holiest of places for the Jewish people. It is regarded by them as the center of the world and the site where the Holy temple once stood, with its relics today comprising the holy Western Wall. For Christians, Jerusalem holds a very significant part in the life of Jesus, being the place where he was eventually crucified and later resurrected. Some of the well-known sites holy to Christians include the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the way of the Cross, also known as the Via Dolorosa. The Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock built on the Temple Mount is the third holiest place for Islam, second only to the pilgrimage sites of Mecca and Medina.
